Kew Palace: Tenants
King George II Augustus: Original Owner of Kew Palace
History
Other than the building being constructed in 1631 by a silk merchant by the name of Samuel Fortrey, it has strong connections with the British Royal House of Hanover.
George II and his consort, Queen Caroline perceived that Kew would be the best lodging for their senior daughters. The next generations of the family used Kew and the adjacent Richmond Lodge as a retreat from their duties during the weekends. He also demolished several of the old buildings and replaced them with one residence that fitted his interests.
Their son Frederick Louis, Prince of Wales spent only a considerable amount of time at Kew alternating between residences.
Prince Frederick's son King George William Frederick III used the palace during his summers and also spent a considerable amount of his childhood there. Kew Palace was one of his favourite residences.
Unluckily during his illness, he was restrained and tortured by his doctors on the grounds.
Most of the historic buildings relative to Kew Palace are demolished but those that remain are within the custody of the Historic Royal Palaces organisation.
